Answer These 3 Question to Build Your Personal Brand

Many feel that building a personal brand is simply about figuring out what to post on social media. The most important element of building your personal brand is actually about knowing where you want to be in a year. I love working with clients and empowering them to identify their goals, who they want to be, and where they want to go.

The work we do with clients in building their personal brand strategy is digging in to build the 3 brand pillars for our clients—and focus on the messaging tactics for each of those pillars. But before we identify those brand pillars, we have clients answer 3 main questions. The answers to these questions are the building blocks of us creating their personal brand.

Answering these three questions will lead you on your way to building an intentional personal brand in 2020:

  1. What are you known for? If you were to ask family, friends, or coworkers this question, what would they say about you? This can be everything from, “She loves music,” to “She is an incredible communicator and has a skill for selling in ideas,” to “She is an expert in social media.” It doesn’t have to be one thing, but it is important to understand what is the “thing” that most people think of, when they think of you.

  2. What do you want to be known for? We all have an idea in our head, whether explicit or subconscious, of what we WANT to be. However, we don’t always explicitly write down what it is or communicate it. Maybe you are known for your work in social media, but you want to transition into brand partnerships. Maybe you have always been a strong role player on your team, but want to move into a leadership role or be seen as a leader. Whatever it is that you want to be known for, it is important that you push yourself to clarify what it is YOU want.

  3. Where do you want to be this time next year? This is the most important question for you to take time to answer. By knowing where you want to be this time next year, you can create a roadmap with actionable goals to lead you to your ideal opportunities. A one year goal allows you to think realistically on what you want to feel when you look back at your accomplishments for the year. Do you want to have written guest blogs for your favorite publication? Transitioned to a new industry? Promoted? Secured speaking gigs?

I did a recent mini-workshop via Instagram Live on this topic, watch here to gain more insight on defining these three questions for yourself:

These three questions aren’t easy to answer. You will need to take the time you need to thoughtfully consider what you want. By answering these questions, you will have the clarity you need to be more intentional about your personal brand!
